Alex Paik Solo Exhibition "Caesura" at Praxis NY

Fran Holstrom

RECEPTION: Saturday from 3pm-5pm. I hope that you can make it!
ON VIEW: March 13th - March 16th, from 10 to 6 pm

CAESURA…metaphor of silence, of breath, the sacred emptiness of
Asian traditions, the pure potential between each thought or action,
our opportunity to transcend.

In the artist’s own words, “My work explores perception, reflected color, and improvisation within structure, taking cues and ideas from contrapuntal music and post minimalism. For the past few years I have been focusing on site-responsive paper installations that focus on a single geometric unit as its base. These installations are temporary and improvised onsite, with each exhibition becoming a different variation of the same piece. There is a tenderness and sadness in both the fragility of the materials as well as the ephemeral nature of the work’s form but at the same time there is an unlimited, even optimistic, potential for recombination.”

Alex Paik Solo Exhibition at Trestle

Fran Holstrom

Opening Reception: September 7th, 7-9pm
On View: through September 22, 2018

In classical music a stretto is when the subject of a fugue is repeated in close, overlapping succession, usually at the end of the piece. Similarly, Paik’s fugue-like modular wall installations focus on one shape or unit as its subject which is then repeated in different orientations as the piece is hung. The way that the units layer and form other compound shapes mimic the way a fugue’s subject is transposed, inverted, and folded into itself. His work explores ephemerality, reflected color, and repetition as a generative compositional process.

Stretto, the title of the exhibition, is also a nod to the many overlapping roles that Paik has as an artist, director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, curator of Satellite Art Show, and chief curator at Trestle Gallery.
